5 Questions to Ask Before You Makeover Your Garage

With the discovery that your garage is actually part of your home and can be used for more than storing things you don’t want, the concept of the ‘garage makeover’ has become popular. Just like making over a kitchen or a basement, the garage makeover is designed to enhance the look, function and value of your home.

1. What’s My Overall Goal?

The first thing you want to figure out before you makeover your garage is what you want to accomplish by doing the work. What do you envision when you see the completed garage? Get even more specific by asking questions like:

  • Do I want to use it for storage only?
  • If so, what types of things will I store?
  • Will I be using appliances in the garage?
  • Do I want to keep a vehicle in here?
  • Will it be a multi-purpose room?

Once you’re able to narrow down the overall goal for the garage, you can move on to the details of the makeover.

2. What Upgrades are Needed?

Now, you’ll need to know what upgrades are necessary to reach your original goal. Some possibilities include:

  • Replacing walls or ceiling material
  • Painting the walls or floor
  • Replacing the garage door
  • Adding insulation
  • Adding lighting, outlets and wiring
  • Re-doing the floor
  • Replacing or adding a sink
  • Adding or replacing storage shelves, etc

Naturally, the outdoor upgrades can take on a life of their own, depending on what you’re doing with the space. In some cases, the changes will be relatively minor and with others you’ll be changing virtually every element of the garage.

3. What’s My Budget?

Which brings you to your budget. You may want to work out a budget in the first or second step, but you’ll have to squeeze it in at least by the third. Your budget will help determine precisely which upgrades you’re able to make and what kind of schedule to use.

4. DIY or Professionals?

The budget, along with your DIY skill and desire will help you decide if you should do this makeover on your own or hire professionals to do it. If you have a decent budget, but home renos just aren’t your thing, using reputable professionals is likely the way to go. If your budget is small and you’re good with your hands, you may want to tackle it on your own!

5. All at Once or in Phases?

If your budget is on the low side and you’re all thumbs, you might have to space it out a little so you can afford to have the experts do it right. The same is true if you’re doing it alone and can’t find the time to do it all at once.

Whether you do it yourself or use professionals in garage organization and get it done all at once or have to do it in sections, make sure you cover all your bases. Get those inspections done and follow the bylaws and building codes for your particular area. Then you can enjoy your new garage without having to look back.
